The World Boxing Council (WBC) has taken away Jermall Charlo’s middleweight title due to his lack of activity. Carlos Adames has been officially recognized as the new champion in the 160-pound weight class. Charlo had not defended his title since 2021 and will now be acknowledged by the WBC in the super middleweight category following his recent fight against Jose Benavidez Jr.
The WBC has acknowledged Charlo’s circumstances and plans to collaborate with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) to determine the most suitable path forward for him. Adames is scheduled to defend his title against Terrell Gausha next month on the undercard of the Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin bout in Las Vegas on June 15th.
The decision to strip Charlo of his title arose from an extended period of inactivity, and the WBC exhibited patience by allowing him to retain the belt for as long as they did. Numerous observers believed he should have been dethroned earlier for failing to defend his title for three years.
Jermall Charlo has his sights set on a title match against Canelo Alvarez, while Adames must maintain an active presence as the newly appointed WBC middleweight champion. Adames previously held the interim middleweight title in October 2022 but has not competed in 11 months since his last bout. It is crucial for Adames to make the most of his elevated status by staying busy and facing formidable opponents.
