On Saturday night, Canelo Alvarez defended his unified super middleweight title against Edgar Berlanga in what turned out to be a lopsided match as many had anticipated. Canelo’s superior skills, experience, and intelligence proved too much for Berlanga, who fought bravely but was clearly outmatched.

Since his loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, Canelo’s recent fights haven’t excited fans much. His most notable fight was his third encounter with Golovkin, but by then, GGG was past his prime. Canelo has since defeated Jon Ryder, Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and most recently, Berlanga.

After the Berlanga fight, potential opponents for Canelo were discussed on the DAZN broadcast, including names like Terence Crawford, Dmitry Bivol, and David Benavidez. While fans have been eager for a matchup with Benavidez, it doesn’t seem likely in the near future. A rematch with Bivol is on Canelo’s radar, depending on Bivol’s upcoming bout against Artur Beterbiev. A fight with Crawford was also mentioned, but there are challenges to overcome.

The lingering question is: who will step up as Canelo Alvarez’s next challenger? This piece from Rummy’s Corner explores possible future opponents for Canelo and reflects on his victory over Berlanga. Check out the video for one perspective.
